Day programs

Regain strength and function after spinal surgery or injury

Arcadia Pittwater’s spinal day rehabilitation program is for people who are recovering from spinal surgery or have had a recent injury to the spine. The program is offered on a sessional basis on set days and times a week.

Our spinal day rehabilitation program is based on a multidisciplinary approach with input from your surgeon or specialist, rehabilitation consultant, physiotherapist, occupational therapist and hydrotherapist. We will assess your function and limitations and discuss your goals with you, and develop a program specifically tailored to your ability, needs and goals.

Your therapy team will guide you in a gentle strengthening program for the core and affected muscles and a graded walking program with the aim of progressing towards a gradual return to your baseline function.

We maintain communication with your specialists throughout your admission to ensure your treatment supports and enhances the current treatment plan. You will have regular reviews with your rehabilitation consultant to monitor any pain and progression.

The spinal rehab program has a strong focus on education to help you understand your condition and enable you to return to everyday activities as your body continues to heal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does day rehabilitation involve?
We will arrange an initial consultation with a rehabilitation specialist to assess your needs and enrol you in a program. Your day rehabilitation program is likely to include two to three sessions a week. Each session will run for between one and a half to two hours. Your doctor will discuss your recommended therapies with you, and you will meet with your rehabilitation specialist throughout your program.
Do I need a referral to access a rehabilitation program?
A referral is required from your GP or specialist to access one of our day rehabilitation programs. You will be assessed by our rehabilitation specialist once your referral has been processed.
How do I dress and what do I bring to a rehabilitation session?
  • comfortable clothes for exercise
  • suitable covered footwear
  • a water bottle
  • towel and swimming costume for hydrotherapy
What are the fees and charges for day rehabilitation?
If you have private health cover, most funds cover 100% of the program – meaning there is often no-gap payment required. Our team will check these details with your health fund prior to your commencement in your program. We will let you know if there are any out-of-pocket expenses. For example, some health funds charge an excess or co-payment if you have not had any other hospital admissions in the current year. Other options for payment include self-funding, Department Veterans’ Affairs, Comprehensive Third Party and Work Cover.
Do you provide assistance with transport?
We may be able to provide transport to and from the hospital – depending on your location – for a small cost. Our administration team can help with any transport requirements.
What are the hours of operation for the rehabilitation program?
Our day rehabilitation programs operate Monday to Friday between 8.00am-4.00pm.

Our wellness program enables you to continue your exercise program

You can continue your exercise at the end of your rehabilitation program via our day wellness program, which is supervised independent exercise for one hour sessions in either the gym or the hydrotherapy pool.
